I am a linguist, broadly defined, which means I am interested in studying both properties of specific languages and language in general, i.e., the ways a language is acquired by its native speakers, the ways language is used for communication both among native speakers and in international, intercultural contexts, and the ways languages are used by speech communities to embody and transmit cultural concepts and identities.
My primary research interests lie in discourse analysis, language in the media, second language acquistion, language teacher professional development, English for academic purposes, sign language linguistics, sociolinguistics and intercultural communication. In recent years, I have presented lectures and papers on these and other topics in academic contexts in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Poland, Australia, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and Korea.
I teach university courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level related to my interests. More information on the topics of my courses can be found in a separate section of this webpage.
I have held academic and administrative leadership positions over the years in cultural contexts ranging from the U.S. to Europe to the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region. Most recently, I have been serving as Director of the International Summer Session in Korean and Asian Studies (ISS) in Korea at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Basically, my job is to ensure the academic credibility, internal smooth functioning and external public profile of the program in all its aspects. I am pleased to be able to say that our program enjoys a reputation among scholars familiar with it as the most academically challenging one of its kind for the students and the most intellectually stimulating one for the faculty.
In addition to my regular teaching duties at the university, I try to maintain an active research agenda. Information on my publications and presentations at academic conferences and invitations I have received in recent years to serve as guest speaker or panelist can be found in other sections of this webpage.
